All of the children were in school today. They were waiting for a very special visitor to arrive. They all sat quietly at assembly in the big hall. Some of the children were nervous but some were very excited.
The door to the hall opened slowly and all of the children sat upright to try and see who it was. The first thing they saw was a big black wet pointy nose, then two big pointy furry ears.
Can you guess who it was?
It was 'Nelson', the big clever Police dog. PC Naz was following him holding his lead.
The children gasped when they saw him, he was very big. Nelson was very pleased to see all the children. He was wagging his tail and panting with his big long pink tongue hanging out of his mouth. The children started to laugh and cheer, they were just as pleased to see Nelson.
The head teacher, Mr Stern, said loudly "QUIET CHILDREN PLEASE!"
The hall went quiet and the children sat upright with their arms folded and legs crossed.
Nelson sat down facing the children. PC Naz said "Good morning children, I am PC Naz and this is Nelson the police dog, he has come here to see you all today. " PC Naz turned to Nelson and said "Isn't that right Nelson?" Nelson barked once. It was very loud.
The children giggled.
"There is something about Nelson that is very special, does anybody know what that is?" said PC Naz.
One little boy put his hand up and shouted "Is it his long tail?" PC Naz chuckled "No that's not right" he said.
"Is it his big hairy feet?" said a little girl.
PC Naz shook his head and said "Not quite"
"What about his big eyes and ears?" said another boy.
"Nearly!" said PC Naz.
"It's his nose that's special" said Naz. "Nelson can find anything by just using his nose, I will show you"
The children gasped in amazement, they were not sure whether he could or not.
PC Naz took Nelsons ball from his pouch on his belt. Nelson saw the ball and got very excited, he started wagging his tail very fast. PC Naz turned Nelson around and made him face the wall. "Stay there Nelson" he said.
PC Naz walked to the back of the big hall behind where the children were sitting and hid the ball under a pile of coats. Nobody could see the ball, it was right at the bottom and hidden very well. Nelson was still facing the wall, he had not moved, he had no idea where his ball was, but he liked this game. PC Naz walked back over to Nelson and turned him around. He said to the children "If Nelson sniffs you he is just looking for his ball, don't be frightened, he is very friendly." The children were very excited.
"Do you think he will find it?" said PC Naz.
Most of the children were not sure, some of them said no, some of them said yes.
.......What do you think?
PC Naz unclipped Nelsons lead, he bent down and whispered in Nelsons ear "Find it!"
Nelson put his nose to the floor and started sniffing. He walked up and down in front of the children sniffing everything. He sniffed up and down and around and around. He went in and out of the children sniffing their feet and clothes, he sniffed the head teacher and sniffed the doors and windows. The children thought this was very funny and were laughing loudly.
Nelson was concentrating, he sniffed his way around everything. His tail was wagging, his nose was working and his tongue was hanging out again!
He finally came to the pile of coats. He sniffed harder and harder all around them. He then went into the pile and disappeared underneath them. The coats were moving about because Nelson was inside searching for his ball. It then went still. The children waited still and silent, their eyes were fixed on the coats.
Suddenly, Nelsons head popped up out of the coats! In his mouth was his ball.
All of the children were cheering and clapping, they could not believe he had found it.
Nelson was feeling very special and proud, he bounded back to PC Naz with his tail wagging and his ball in his mouth.
"Well done Nelson" said PC Naz.
Nelson was very happy.
